Organic food sales rise again, eggs are most popular “bio” food

Organic produce accounted for 3.5% of total supermarket spending on food in the first six months of this year, national statistics agency CBS said on Tuesday.

During the same period in 2024, organic food accounted for 3.2% of supermarket spending on groceries. The most significant increase was seen in sales of organic potatoes, fruit and vegetables.

Eggs account for the largest share of organic food supermarket sales and some 17% of all eggs sold in Dutch food stores are organic. Coffee and tea are the second most popular organic foods at 6.5%, followed by potatoes, fruit and vegetables at 5.5%.

The CBS also confirmed on Tuesday that inflation fell by 0.1 percentage point to 2.8% in August.
